Individual therapy

I work with individuals with longstanding relational difficulties toward both the self and others. This can present as personality disorders, anxiety, depression, or attachment difficulties. I also work well with individuals who may be functioning well “on the outside” but internally feel distant from themselves, others or who describe a feeling of emptiness.

I believe our earliest experiences and relationships create a foundation for our psychological health. We will not only explore the unconscious processes of this old foundation, but the ways in which, as adults, we have continued building upon this foundation. When we consciously discover what we are currently “building” from we get to decide if it is what we really want.

I believe much suffering comes from a dysfunctional/avoidant relationship with the givens of existence.  Death, meaninglessness, isolation, and freedom are the "ultimate concerns" that accompany the content one brings to therapy. (Irvin Yalom, Existential Psychotherapy). Behind the conflict and suffering that may bring you into therapy there is often some essential questions such as: What is the purpose of all of this? Am I going to be ok? How can I tolerate an uncertain and brief life? Am I good enough? Will I be loved and cared for when I need it most? Am I truly alone? It can be terrifying to face these fears that lurk in the darkness of the human experience, but it is a path to more meaning and vitality.

The most common approaches I use are:

  • Psychodynamic Psychotherapy to access long held experiences, thoughts, ideas, behaviors, and feelings that impact your wellbeing.

  • Transference Focused Psychotherapy to explore and integrate a coherent, realistic, stable experience of self and others through the therapeutic relationship.

  • Internal family systems to build awareness and compassion for all parts of the self, particularly the parts of self we avoid, feel shame about, or are confused by.

  • Existential psychotherapy perspectives to identify and expand a sense of meaning and purpose.

  • CBT and DBT toolbox for skill building and symptoms management.

What’s most important is YOU. I tailor treatment to who you are and what you need. There is no “right” way to heal or grow. We are a team and together we will find the skills and strategies that work for you.

Consultation and SUpervision

I offer clinical consultation and supervision for fellow therapists and counselors. I have found consultation and supervision to be the most important aspect of my own self-care and growth as a healer.

We will work to identify and maximize your strengths and gifts as a therapist, while exploring the “blind-spots,”that exist in us all, with compassion, curiosity and without judgement. I value exploring the real-time emotions, energies, and reactions that arise in a therapeutic relationship and how we can harness these to improve outcomes for clients and ourselves.

I work best with clinicians who are curious about enhancing their ability to approach relational phenomenon live in-session. I believe strongly that process matters just as much as content and is a vehicle through which therapy becomes most effective. If you feel stuck, flat, or uncertain how to help a client, you both will almost certainly benefit from introducing relational process into your sessions!

A note on insurance

As an out of network provider, I do not handle any claims. If you choose to use your out-of-network benefits, please be aware that your insurance will still require:

  1. Diagnosis-For some individuals, there is significant risk of an official documented mental health diagnosis. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about this.

  2. Medical Necessity-Medical necessity may limit your number of sessions. Prevention is unfortunately, not considered medically necessary by insurance companies. If you have a below-threshold diagnosis your therapy sessions are not deemed medically necessary.

I recommend this informative article from the NWA Center for Psychology for more information on some of the drawbacks of insurance oversight in psychotherapy
